I relocated to the Auburn-Opelika area in 2005 when my husband Jason started his PhD program at Auburn University. Over two decades later, I can tell you it was one of the best decisions we ever made. If you're considering a move to this area, here's what I wish I'd known when we first arrived.

The Community Vibe

Auburn and Opelika offer a blend of established community living and big-town amenities. Auburn is a college town, so there's energy, culture, and year-round campus activity. Opelika has a more established, historic feel with a revitalizing downtown. Together, they offer a wide range of options.

Schools

Both Auburn City Schools and Opelika City Schools have established academic programs. Specific school assignments depend on your address, so I always recommend identifying neighborhoods that feed into the schools you're interested in. I can help you narrow down options based on your priorities.

Cost of Living

Compared to Atlanta, Birmingham, or most major metros, the cost of living here is significantly lower. Home prices range from the $300Ks to well into the $3M range for luxury properties, but you get a lot of value for your money — larger lots, newer construction, and a lower overall cost of living.

The Job Market

Auburn University is the area's largest employer, but the region also benefits from a growing healthcare sector centered around East Alabama Medical Center. The area's population growth continues to attract new businesses and services.

Getting Around

Auburn is about 1.5 hours from Atlanta, an hour from Montgomery, and two hours from Birmingham. The proximity to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport is a major plus for frequent travelers. I-85 runs right through the area, making commuting and travel convenient.

What to Do

SEC football game days are an experience like no other. Beyond sports, there are local restaurants, breweries, hiking trails at Chewacla State Park, golf courses along the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, and a growing arts and culture scene. The Auburn-Opelika area has more to offer than most people expect.

My Advice

If you're relocating here, start by identifying your priorities — school district, commute, neighborhood feel, budget. I'll help you match those priorities to the right community. Having been through the relocation process myself, I know what matters most when you're starting fresh in a new place.
